Crystal Learns Spanish

When life gives you lemons... make lemonade. When work gives you the ultimatum... go to Costa Rica to learn Spanish! My mom says my life "is a do-over". Im not so sure about that. But the opportunity has come in my mid 30's to do something I’ve dreamt of for years; travel abroad and learn the Spanish language. This blog is for my friends and family to enjoy the tales of my experience.

October begins:
Spanish Level: My Spanish is at a survival level. After 6 weeks of instruction I still have not covered all the verb tenses. I don’t know how to say “I would” but I do know how to say “I did” and “I will”.

The week flew by… trying to get ready to leave Quepos. I booked 2 weeks at Conversa in San Jose and my first day is next Monday. Sunday Stephanie put hair color on my hair, Carmen’s and Wilbert’s. The rest of the week was pretty boring. I bought some souvenirs and shipped them home because I don’t have room in my luggage for them (imagine that!!). I got some things for my tico family too. I went to the beach when it wasn’t raining and tried to talk to as many people as possible before I had to go.

Monday I got really sad because I didn’t want to leave. My poor teacher. So she lived through that… then I asked her to take me on a very unusual field trip for the week since it was my last week at school. We went to the River Tarcoloes and the national park next to it. The river is a famous viewing site for crocodiles. It was a 2 hour bus ride from Quepos. We packed lunches and didn’t get home till 6pm because we had to wait on the 4pm bus, we were ready to leave at 2. It was a LONG day but it was worth it I thought. I saw lots of BIG crocodiles and in the park I saw a Toucan. For gringos the park cost $8 and for ticos it was $1.50 (hmmmmmn).

Kimba came home on Tuesday but he had to go back for a checkup but he’s doing well. The vet is absolutely gorgeous!!! and bi-lingual. Too bad he’s married or I’d have stayed in Quepos for a few more weeks for sure.

Geraldo came back and has made a lot of progress on the bathroom. He is going to be working in there for at least another week and for another 3 weeks minimum on the second floor. We talked a long time one evening when everyone was at the store. He has been married 2 times and now has a live in girlfriend a few kids and a lot of brothers and sisters. He lives near San Jose and invited me to visit him in the country and tour Cartago if I like while I’m in San Jose.
