Crystal Learns Spanish

When life gives you lemons... make lemonade. When work gives you the ultimatum... go to Costa Rica to learn Spanish! My mom says my life "is a do-over". Im not so sure about that. But the opportunity has come in my mid 30's to do something I’ve dreamt of for years; travel abroad and learn the Spanish language. This blog is for my friends and family to enjoy the tales of my experience.

Saturday:
Spanish Level: Moving to a new city is scary, I hope I know as much Spanish as I think I do. I hope I can talk to people in San Jose.

Today I took the bus to San Jose. The bus driver was terrible!!! I thought we were going to die the entire trip and we almost rear ended a car when we were closer to San Jose. This is the first time I’ve been scared in any transportation here but it made up for all the times I wasn’t scared. I wanted to ask him where the fire was but my dictionary was packed.

Carmen has a sister who lives in San Jose (or close to San Jose). I called them to ask if her son, Mauricio (the banker/dance instructor, who visited Quepos a few weeks ago) would go to the football(soccer) game with me on Sunday. It is a big game between the country’s two most popular teams, Saprissa and Alajuela. The football game has been moved to a week from Wednesday but when I called them, they invited me to stay at their house for the weekend. This was AWESOME because now I don’t feel like I’m moving to a place where I don’t know anyone.

Carmen’s sister, Mayela, and her husband Freddie picked me up at a Best Western where I had the driver drop me off. Freddie travels all over Costa Rica with his work so he pointed out all the “highlights” on the way. They live about 20 minutes from San Jose. When I got to their house Allen, their other son took my luggage – eek! They made me feel very welcome and I tried to talk to them as much as possible with my Spanish. They were all so nice to me. They have a little fast food restaurant window attached to their house and it’s only open on the weekends 5-10pm. This was a lot of fun because a lot of folks were stopping by and chatting AND there was a lot of food. The 4 kids took turns helping their mom in the store and I tried to help too. It was a lot of fun and sort of nuts. They have two dogs too. I felt right at home.
