Friday:
Spanish Level: Today at school I learned how to say “I wonder” in Spanish. My teacher told me I have about 6 more verb tenses to learn. Ughhhh…
After school I wanted to buy some new shoes and some binoculars for the weekend. I asked my teacher how to say binoculars in Spanish and which bus to take and set out for central San Jose. I was sort of nervous about the trip especially with it being Friday the 13th and all, but considering I had literally walked from one side of San Jose to the other just two days ago I figured the worst that could happen would be I had to walk a long way (or get pick-pocketed). So I went down town by myself!!! It was actually a lot of fun. Central San Jose is a lot like down town Atlanta from the Fox to Underground. There were a lot of people all over the place, the bus was crowded, there were street vendors yelling about their products and people walking all over trying to get where they were going, it was close to lunch time so some people were sitting around in the parks eating.
I went into a few camping and camera stores looking for binoculars. My confidence to speak Spanish is poor but I was able to ask for what I wanted. I shopped in a few shoe stores too. Walking around the stores was interesting. A person came up to me asking for money and I used my new phrase for the week: “estoy limpia”, which means “I’m clean”, as in…I don’t have any money. The cashier in the store laughed and the beggar left… Then I had to find the right bus to take back. I had noticed a stop close to the binocular store so I went back to it. The bus took forever!!, while we were waiting for the bus someone asked me the time… eek. When I told him what time it was a lady next to me asked me if I spoke Spanish (she knew I didn’t ) but I talked to her for a while. I know more than people think at first because it’s hard for me to understand new people or questions I’m not familiar with or if they talk fast but I can understand a good deal if they go a little slower and use some simple sentences and I know enough to talk back. 20 minutes later we were still waiting on a bus. A weird guy in the street had two dogs and he was doing tricks with them for tips to entertain the now, block long bus line.
Miracle of miracles the bus finally came, I got on it… and when it got close to my exchange I actually recognized the area, knew to get off and knew where to go for my next bus! I made it home with no problems and everything I bought! I was very proud of myself.
When I got home there was more good news, Siegfried got a job with HP. He starts work in a few weeks. Federico already works for them but Siegfried doesn’t think they will be working in the same building. At any rate, Siegfried is very happy and so is his mom. Not a bad day for a Friday 13th. In Costa Rica they don’t have issue with Friday the 13th, it’s Tuesday the 13th. I personally think that is better because it doesn’t defeat the purpose of TGIF (in Spanish: Gracias a Dios esta´ viernes).
